I want to congratulate the War Eagles and Coach Kilgore and Coach Downing on a successful first season. From last fall to now it has been a whirlwind. Fundraising ideas...how much $$ ???!!!...football concession stand...cookie sales..pancake breakfast...ice storm clean-up...garage sale...chicken cook...ad sales!!!...Florida trip...state tournament win. It has all been fun and I can't wait to do it all again (well, maybe not all of it!).
We got off to a blazing 10-2 start, including a great spring break trip to Florida, and came back and qualified for the state tournament. We lost some games we should have won but I think we found out that we can play with the best of the conference. Winning a game in the state tournament and coming soooo close to advancing to the next round was a great ending.
I think I speak for all of the parents that we have enjoyed the year. We all feel blessed to have 2 fine coaches (as coaches and as people) leading our team and can't wait for next year!
Go War Eagles!!!

Heartbreaking Loss Ends Season
We had our 2nd state tournament game 2 1/2 hours later in Springdale. It was against Southside, the 2 seed from the 7A West. We had won one and lost one against them earlier in the season. We scored a run in the first. Spanky reached on a error by their shortstop and scared us all when he ran to second. Their shortstop wasn't paying attention and he took advantage of it. Collin went in and ran for Spanky and Payton hit a single that got Collin home. After that it was a pitcher's duel. Zac pitched for us (struck out 8 Rebles!) and kept Southside from scoring until the 6th. They scored a run they should not have gotten in the 6th. They hit into a perfect double play but the runner going into second ran into Matt. Coach K argued for interference to no avail. So, it was tied 1-1 after 6. We played into the 9th still tied and got 2 outs before Southside scored a run to win. We were all sick but very very proud of the way they played and coached! Southside beat Cabot on Tuesday to advance to the championship game. How close we were. Can't wait 'til next season!
First State Tournament Victory!
Monday the War Eagles made history again and won their first state tournament game. Congratulations!!! We finally got to play after waiting on it to stop raining for 3 days. We played Conway - they were the 3 seed from the 7A Central conference. We played in Fayetteville on a very wet field. This has become Payton's favorite field - he hit another home run there, his 3rd at Fayetteville for the season. Zac was on base (he went 5 for 5!) so that gave us a 2 run lead in the first. Travis pitched and Conway didn't do much against him except strike out (9 times!). No one from Conway got a hit until the 5th inning and we played great defense. Spanky added a home run in the 6th inning - Zac was on base again and scored! We ended up with 13 hits and won 7-3. Way to go War Eagles!!!

War Eagles qualify for STATE!
We have qualified for the 7A State Baseball Tournament! On Saturday, Southside completed a sweep of Northside and that gave us the 6th seed spot! Congratulations, War Eagles! It looks like we will play Conway at 6:30 on Friday in Fayetteville or Springdale.
Mounties Sweep
The first War Eagle and Mountie baseball game was played at Arvest Park in Springdale. What a privilege to play there! There were a lot of fans - Coach E brought the football boys down and there were a lot of Heritage students - all cheering loudly. It was a beautiful day for baseball!
We got off to a good start and scored 2 runs in the first innings. Spanky had a double down the left field line, Payton walked and then Reed had a single between the shortstop and the 3rd basemen to score Collin (running for Spanky!). Payton was at third and scored on a passed ball. The Mounties scored 2 in the first also. It stayed 2-2 until the 4th. The Mounties got several hits and scored 5 runs. We scored another run in the 6th but couldn't get anymore across. We had a lot of opportunities but left way too many runners on. We play the Mounties again on Monday but the forecast doesn't look good... rain, rain, rain.
We actually got the game in on Monday. We played ok but the Mounties hit the ball all over the park - 15 singles - and won.

War Eagles split with Southside
The War Eagles split a DH with Fort Smith Southside tonight. The first game was ugly and we lost 5-2. Travis pitched a good game but we had trouble with them playing small ball. We won the second game 3-2. Zac was the winning pitcher and Payton got a save for pitching the last 5 outs. Travis started off with a triple and scored on Spanky's groundout. Zac, Spanky and Payton had consecutive hits in the 3rd and we scored 2 runs. That was enough as the pitching was good and we played good defense behind them. Grant had a great throw from right field to get a runner out at third and Spanky threw out one at third, too.

War Eagles win at Parkview
We traveled to Springfield, MO Friday and played the same school as the football team played in their first ever game. We hit the ball all over the park - 14 hits! - and beat them 9-4. I don't think they are a very good sports school! They have nice facilities, though!
Fayetteville takes 2
The War Eagles lost a heartbreaker to Fayetteville in Game 1 of the DH. We were up 5-2 going into the bottom of the 7th and couldn't hang on. Travis pitched a great game - the PurpleDogs couldn't figure him out. Payton had 2 HRs. The second game was what you would expect after not winning the first game. We gave up 4 runs in the first and never could get the hitting going.

War Eagles 1-1 on trip south
The War Eagles traveled south to play against 2 5A teams this weekend. We won a game against LR Mills on Friday night 13-3 and lost the game against White Hall on Saturday 9-11. The Mills team didn't put up much fight against us. They had several state championship billboards hung up around their field but this is obviously not one of those teams. One of the billboards had Coach Kevin Downing - our Coach Downing's brother! Hope he follows in his big brother's footsteps.
The White Hall game was a base-running fiasco for us. We started off with the bases loaded and didn't score because of base-running errors. We fought hard but could never turn the corner and get ahead.

War Eagles Split with Bentonville
The War Eagles split a DH conference series with Bentonville making us 4-4 in conference play. Travis pitched the first game. We could never get the bats going and Bentonville took advantage of walks and errors to have 2 big innings. We mounted a comeback in the 7th but couldn't score enough. The second game was the same except we were the ones taking advantage of their errors and walks. Zac pitched and was the winner. Reed came in for the last out and recorded a save. We started off the game with Zac getting a single and Spanky and Payton walking. Reed laid down a great sac bunt and was hit in the back on the throw. Zac and Collin (for Spanky) both scored. Spanky led off the 3rd inning with a walk and we mixed hits with errors, batted around (+2) and scored 6 runs. That was enough as Zac pitched well and we played good defense behind him.

War Eagles win one in Branson
The War Eagles won 1 game in the Branson Dan Furst Memorial Tournament this weekend. We lost to St. Thomas Aquinas from Overland Park, KS on Friday. It was their first game of the season (kinda late, huh?). They finished third in Kansas 5A baseball last year after winning the championship the year before. They were all seniors, not that it mattered. They just hit the ball all over the park. They won all 3 of their games in Branson. We lost to Branson HS on Saturday. We committed several errors and had the game-tying run thrown out at the plate. It took a perfect throw to get the out and they got it. We beat Odessa HS to win our last game there.

War Eagles lose 2 to HarBer
The War Eagles suffered their first conference DH defeat tonight to Springdale HarBer. The first game was tied at the end of 7 innnings. HarBer scored 2 unearned runs in the top of the 8th. We scored 1 run when Reed doubled and Grant singled him home. We had the bases loaded but couldn't get another run across. The second game didn't start well for us. We gave up a lead-off home run and then allowed HarBer to score another run in the 2nd. We got within a run in the 4th when Travis scored on Spanky's groundout. They scored 2 more runs in the 7th to pull away. Tough losses - especially game 1.

War Eagles Split with Northside
War Eagles 8 Northside 2
The War Eagles made it 7 in a row with a win against Northside in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Spanky scored (well, Collin running for Spanky!) in the 1st and 3rd but Northside tied it up in the bottom of the 3rd. The game's highlight came in the 4th - Grant's first ever home run that cleared the bleachers at Hunt's Park. Casey had walked before G's HR so we went up 4-2. We scored 4 more runs - Matt twice, Brandon and Stewie. Travis pitched and got the win - his 3rd of the year. Dax Dupire scored their 2 runs but took the loss.
War Eagles 0 Northside 2
We hit the ball hard in game 2 but it always seemed to be right at them. We call it 'at'em ball'. We ended up with more hits than Northside but couldn't get them strung together at the right time. We will learn from it and be better next time we are in that situation!

War Eagles take 2 from Springdale
Game 1 of conference DH - a 5-4 WIN!
The War Eagles won their first 7A conference game, beating the Springdale Bulldogs 5-4. Travis was the starting pitcher and got the win. Reed followed him in the 5th and picked up a save. We didn't play our best baseball but an ugly win is a WIN. We had 3 costly errors that we haven't been having. It got dicy in the top of the 7th. We were up 5-2. Springdale started with a walk, got a single and then we had an error, allowing them to score a run. Reed got a strikeout, they hit a RBI sac fly to make the score at 5-4 and they had a runner at third. Reed got a called strike three to end the game. Whew!!! Our first conference win! WOW!
Game 2 - 6-0 WIN!
We scored 2 runs in the 1st, 5th and 6th to beat Springdale again. Zac pitched a great game and struck out 13 Bulldogs. Payton pitched the final 2 outs. Travis' bat was hot with a single and a double plus he walked twice and scored twice. Zac also scored twice. Brandon was playing third and had a couple of really good plays. I think both Zac and Brandon are starting to get into the baseball groove after basketball. They are both valuable additions to our team.

Travis' bat was hot with a single and a double plus he walked twice and scored twice. Zac also scored twice. Brandon was playing third and had a couple of really good plays. I think both Zac and Brandon are starting to get into the baseball groove after basketball. They are both valuable additions to our team.
Way to start conference play, War Eagles!

War Eagles 6 Greenwood 4
The War Eagles got a quality win tonight against a Greenwood team that hadn't allowed a run against them this season. Travis was pitching and he and Matt turned the first War Eagle double play to end the 1st. We scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st after Travis reached on an error and Stewie and Spanky both singled. Payton hit into a double play but Trav scored. Reed lined a double to left center to score Stewie. Trav got out of a couple of jams in the 2nd and 3rd. Matt made 2 nice snags at 2nd to end both innings.
We scored 2 more runs in the 5th inning. Casey got a hit down the 3rd base line then Trav singled. With runners at the corners Trav stole 2nd. The Greenwood catcher made a bad throw and Casey scored and Trav moved to 3rd. Their pitcher balked to allow Trav to go home. A cheap run but we will take them any way we can get them.
Greenwood tied it up in the 6th inning. Trav was getting tired and they started hitting the ball well and we had one error to help them out. Payton came in and pitched the rest of the way.
We scored 2 runs on no hits in the bottom of the 6th to win the game. Brandon took a pitch off his helmet for an game winning RBI hit-by-pitch. He went down for a few seconds and his helmet went the opposite way about 10 feet. Not pretty but it looked good on the scoreboard!

Best Sports Tournament-War Eagles 9 Northside 4
The War Eagles moved their record to 3-1 tonight with a win against conference foe Northside in the McDonald's/Best Sports Tournament. Zac Stewart started on the mound and gave up a lead-off home run to Dax Dupire. (He was the NS quarterback last season.) Northside scored a single run again in the top of the 3rd to take a 2-0 lead. We scored a run in the bottom of the third. Spanky started with a single then Payton reached on an error by their 1st baseman. Cody was running for Spanky and he made it to third on the error. Reed had a sac fly to right to score Cody making the score 2-1.
NS scored another run in the top of the 4th but we tied it in the bottom of the inning. Trav walked, Zac reached on an error, scoring Trav and Spanky singled Zac home. We took the lead in the bottom of the 5th. Matt was hit by a pitch that bounced about 5 feet in front of the plate. Grant bunted Matt to second and was really safe at first, although they called him out. We watched the film after the game and he was definately safe. NS committed another error on Huntor's batted ball to third, scoring Matt.
We really took off in the 6th inning - batting around. Travis had a single, Zac reached on yet another NS error and then Spanky hit the first ever War Eagle homerun. Payton eagerly followed Spanky with a homerun of his own. It was exciting! They couldn't wait to call Huntor's Grandma after the game to order their pies. I think both ordered apple. Grandma will bring them with a big smile on her face!
We scored another run in the 6th when Reed, Matt and Grant all got singles. Reed started pitching in the 5th and held NS to one run in the 7th.
I have to brag a little bit - Spanky went 4 for 4 and had 4 RBIs. They should have gotten him out his second time to the plate. He popped it up high on the right side and the 1st and 2nd basemen couldn't decide who was going to take it.

War Eagles 3 Van Buren 1
On a cold night (45 degrees) in Van Buren the War Eagles recorded their 2nd win to move to 2-1 on the season. Travis started the game with a walk, luckily made it to second on a bad throw by their first baseman, stole 3rd and scored on Payton's single up the middle. Travis was also pitching. He ended the night with 9 strikeouts and only 1 walk and a hit batter. He gave up 2 hits in 5 innings - one of them was a solo home run. Good job, Trav. Payton's bat was hot tonight - he had 2 of our 4 hits, both RBI singles. We scored our other runs in the 6th. Spanky started off with a double. Cody ran for him and scored on Payton's second single. It was a close play at the plate but Cody got there and their catcher dropped the ball. Crief ran for Payton and scored on Reed's groundout to third. Payton came in to pitch in the 6th inning and got the first War Eagle save!
KHEL Radio covered the game. They had trouble with the cell service and they weren't pleased with the results. It should be better next time!
We play Wednesday at 4 at Northwest Park against Northside in the Best Sports/McD tournament.

First War Eagle WIN - 14-3 over Siloam Springs
The War Eagles recorded their first win tonight against Siloam Springs 14-3. We hit the ball well against a SLOW throwing lefty. Reed Brown pitched and struck out 8 Siloam batters.
He was a little shaky the first inning and loaded the bases with 2 walks and an error. We kept them from scoring and we batted well in the bottom of the inning. Grant reached first on a dropped third strike. You never have a chance to throw him out if you drop it! Spanky advanced Grant to third with a single. Reed followed with a single and both Grant and Spanky scored.
Casey and Huntor walked in the 2nd. Grant reached on a error to load the bases and Spanky had 2 RBI single up the middle. Payton had a deep double to score Spanky and Grant.
Matt led off the third with the first War Eagle triple. Siloam's wheels fell off and we sent 13 men to the plate, with 8 of them scoring.
Siloam scored 3 in the top of the 4th on 3 hits.
We played well and only had 1 error. Congratulations on the first win - hopefully the first of many wins this season!

Game 1 - Alma 6 War Eagles 5
The War Eagles opened their inaugural season against Alma today. We got off to a shaky start and gave up 4 runs in the first inning. We settled down in the field but it took us a while to get the bats going.
Spanky got the first ever War Eagle hit in the 4th inning. Tyler ran for him but was left stranded.
We batted around in the 5th inning and scored 4 runs to tie it up. Matt reached on an error then Casey got a hit to right center to move him to 3rd. Collin had the first War Eage RBI - a sac fly to center to score Matt. Huntor walked then Travis hit a single to load the bases. Reed hit the first pitch to right center, scoring Casey and Huntor. Spanky hit a double to score Travis and tie up the game.
Alma scored 2 in the top of the 6th on 3 hits and an error - Aaron Cluck got ahold of a fast ball to deep right center for a triple. Travis walked to lead off the 7th, stole 2nd then Payton hit him home with a single. Tyler ran for Payton and was left stranded at 2nd to end the game.
Travis pitched the first 5 innings and Payton the last 2.

The JV team played Alma after the varsity game. War Eagles 7 - Alma 0. We could have scored more in the 1st inning but there was a 3 outs or 3 runs per inning rule.
The Sophomore team went to Bentonville tonight and got beat in their first 2 games. The second game was alot closer than the first. They will get alot of experience this year!

Garage Sale and Chicken Sale
On Saturday, February 14, 2009 the War Eagle baseball team will be hosting a garage sale in the north building of the Blackie Bond Fieldhouse on 5th St. This will run from 7 am to 1 pm or so.
The doors will open for bringing garage sale stuff and beginning set up about 3 pm on Friday afternoon. The setting up will continue until around 7 to 7:30 pm. If you have stuff and can't make it by that time, please let someone know so we can stay a little later if necessary.
All players should plan on being at the fieldhouse between 6:15 and 7 am.
The same day will also feature a Mr. Whitey Chicken Cook for the baseball team. Players and parents who are working the Chicken Cook will need to be there around 8:30 to 9 am. I think Coach has the players divided up.
